Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

This Review will NOT Spoil the Anime Experience!

So I’ve been totally MIA for a good while. I’ve been busy with GTA4, & Metal Gear Solid 4 and work. I’ve been trying to get this done for awhile now too I’m just having trouble finding a good writing style that wont spoil anything for you guys. At the very least I had quite a few personal achievements while I was gone, beat GTA4 100% & I got the Fox Emblem on MGS4, & I have now officially completed my Metal Gear Solid Collection. Its been easy to get carried away doing other things like playing games and drinking with buddies, sorry to the people that wanted a review on this. I hope it lives up to its expectations, as this is one of my favorite anime’s after having watched it. BTW I’m taking a cue from sensei and copying his writing format from his Clannad Review see how it works out for me, plz comment!

[Overview]

So basically this anime is a Mecha-Anime from Gainax, who have brought us another great Mecha-Anime I still need to watch, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The basic story as I explained in Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann 01 takes place in the perhaps not so distant future. A future where mankind is forced to live underground without any knowledge of the outside world. The main character is Simon, a boy whose only good at drilling for the expansion of his village, finds two strange things buried on the dirt that will change his life. He finds a mecha and its key, following that their village is attacked and with help from his new discovery and his “bro” Kamina, and Yoko, a girl from a neighboring village, they set off in the hopes of freeing mankind from their opression of living underground.

[Feeling & Animation]

This anime is full of action, its not easy on the eyes but its cool. As I stated before I’m a fan of the widescreen format, more specifically 2.35:1, which is incredibly wide. The reason is obvious, a widescreen display always gives a more cinematic feeling to everything. Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, has, just like many anime’s nowadays, adapted the 16:9 widescreen ratio. The soundtrack is amazing too, the intro and ending songs are awesome, check out the Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann Music Blog for more. The action sequences are full of classic mis-proportioning of characters body’s and movements, the exaggeration makes the action look awesome. This isn’t like any anime I’ve ever seen before, its feeling is totally new to me, I’m always watching harem anime’s, or something with a major tsundere character in it, so you can imagine coming from that background to watching this which is full of mecha action is a big change. Another thing thats awesome about this is the comic relief, its displayed at random parts, but it helps develop the story and the action. Bottom line this isn’t like anything I’ve watched before, its totally new and fresh style to my eyes.

[The Story]

The story revolves around Simon, Kamina, & Yoko. Simon and Kamina begin their trip with a failed escape attempt from their village. Soon there after several unexpected things happen, full of comic relief along the way, they both end up in the surface accompanied by Lagann (a mecha simon found and pilots) and Yoko. Together the three of them after spending time together in the surface and getting aquatinted with life outside they take a trip to free mankind from its oppression of living underground. They travel and meet people and have their battles, with Kamina always encouraging Simon, and Yoko always backing them up with her enormous rifle. You have to watch the anime or go to wikipedia to know more, its hard not to spoil anything, I can assure you its a great story and its full of comedy, sentimental moments, plot twists and a very epic denouement (resolve to the plot).

[Conclusion]

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann was a totally new experience to me, up until now I hadn’t watched anything like it in terms of genre and style. Its a very good watch if you’re barely getting into anime or want to try something different. The story, visuals, and soundtrack make this a very special anime, they mesh together to make this a great anime experience. This anime is a story just like many others, a story of life and its obstacles, friendship, love, but more than anything personal accomplishment, what one can do if he sets his mind to it, it reminds me of naruto.

[Rating] 9/10

Its not a perfect score, in my eyes the fast-paced action sets it apart from anything I’ve ever seen, and I liked that at the same time there are comic moments, its a bit too fast for me but its good. The story develops along side the action, the action is well scripted and is at points just epic. The soundtrack is just as epic as the action, and its very well matched. I really liked this anime like i said if you haven’t yet given this genre a try this is a good place to start.

    totally agreed..

the story goes fast but its a problem that Gainax commented before… there were still some details that they had to cut off cause of the short number of eps…
and for the fans… soon we will hav the gurren lagann movie..
