Review: K-ON! – Musical, Funny, Light-Hearted and Awesome

K-ON! Banner

Nothing beats a good Slice-of-Life and Comedy Anime.

This 12 Episode offering, animated by the awesome Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) is just that, but with music….. light music.

There are 3 characteristics that make K-ON:

The perfect voices, character designs, good-feel spirit and constant liveliness that will grab the goodness of your soul, and make you grin, and laugh, throughout its viewing… and of course, make you tap to the beat, the wonderful beat of the Light Music Club.

Every one of the 4 (eventually 5) characters, are irresistably unique, cute & moe….

For some reason, theres not one male character to be seen in the (almost) entirety of the anime. (who cares?)

Yui, protagonist-in-essence, is so… so… (-_-’)… well, she’s in her own for all her dreaming, clumsiness, and near-zero resistance for cuteness, just like the club leader and good friend who’s known as Ritsu.

On that note, Ritsu, she’s all too similar to Yui, but just more focused necessary for her role in the band as the drummer. And despite her similarities to Yui, her unique characteristics do make her stand out.

Theres also Mugi, the tea and sweet bringer, is unique in her own right as well, being drawn to any good-hearted spirit, eager to keep it going, in her sweet delicaces that keep the club from practicing, but always on cloud-nine.

Mio is the intelligent, hard-working scardy-cat of the ‘nth’ degree – she takes care of moe very well, until pretty overshadowed by an eventual new-member who I won’t spoil for you – but earns her ‘-nyan’ name honorific gloriously.

As for musical taste, the opening track should give you a good idea (look for it on YouTube), but they only have a few songs in the anime, and they’re adorable (you’ll know what I mean).

I wouldn’t say J-Pop or J-Rock, maybe somewhere in-between with cute, candyfloss lyrics, but with surprisingly memorable rythmn sections and guitar work cement the musical aspect of the anime… the ending track is a winner, too.

Okay, okay – so I have talked about the good, what about the bad?

A great deal of people were quick to drop this anime, either cause they prefer anime with a bit more seriousness, or simple because they were too hasty.

I hate to criticise any happy-happy anime, but I’m reviewing so (^_^’) – theres only one particular problem with it – and thats the length.

12 Episodes (with a 13th bonus episode) was just not enough, and the anime seemed rushed in story with 2 terms vanishing in front of your eyes. Especially with Lucky Star-esque moments very often; you wish you could see, hear them perform more. So, it’s quite upsetting like that (it’s the 20+Ep length that made Lucky Star, which was a Slice-of-Life anime, another KyoAni production, perfect).

But, for what it’s worth, if your criteria are met by this review (or simply the title of this review), or if you enjoyed Lucky Star or Manabi Straight (another fantastic one), you’ll love this to bits.

K-ON! Forever!! 8.5/10
